Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is PERISCOPE?
PERISCOPE is Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) that is integrated into an Electronic Health Record (EHR). It uses existing patient data from an EHR to accurately predict post-surgery infections. The PERISCOPE  dashboard displays a 7- and 30-day prediction, predictive parameters that influenced the predicted risk, and other real-time infection-related information from the EHR.
  2. What does PERISCOPE exactly predict?
PERISCOPE predicts the likelihood of all types of postoperative bacterial infections, such as surgical site infections, urinary tract infections, and pneumonia.
  3. Is PERISCOPE reliable?
PERISCOPE is a medical device, CE certified under the Medical Device Regulation (MDR) and Healthplus.ai is ISO 13485 and 27001 certified. It is developed in collaboration with surgical staff, microbiologists, and infectious disease specialists from different countries.
  4. How do I know if PERISCOPE works for patients in my hospital?
When PERISCOPE is implemented in your hospital, the algorithm is re-calibrated on your own hospital data and thereafter meets the accuracy and quality standards.
  5. How does PERISCOPE impact patient outcomes in the long term?
By early identifying infection risks, PERISCOPE aims to support clinicians reducing (the impact of) infectious complications, improving recovery, and optimize resource use.
  6. What role does AI play in PERISCOPE?
AI is the core of PERISCOPE, enabling it to analyze vast amounts of real-time patient data to predict postoperative infection risks with high accuracy.
  1. How do I use PERISCOPE as a physician?
Physicians can use PERISCOPE to identify high-risk patients early, diagnose infections earlier, and implement preventive strategies. It also supports the decision of early hospital discharge with confidence. The dashboard can save you time by bringing key EHR information together in one screen.
  2. How do I use PERISCOPE as a nurse?
Nurses can use PERISCOPE to monitor patients, communicate effectively with physicians, and provide timely interventions for high-risk patients.
  3. What does the predicted percentage exactly mean?
If PERISCOPE gives a 7-day postoperative infection risk of 10%, it means that historically, 1 in 10 patients with similar characteristics had a postoperative infection.
  4. How do I interpret the traffic light categories?
Patients are categorized into low, medium, and high-risk groups based on their relative risk within the same specialty (such as surgery, orthopedic surgery or gynaecology) in your hospital.
  5. Does PERISCOPEprovide explanations for its predictions?
Yes, every prediction includes a list of the 10 parameters with the strongest predictive influence in two ways, increasing and decreasing infection risk.
  6. When does PERISCOPE issue a prediction?
Predictions are issued once, immediately after surgery.
  7. What do I tell my patient about PERISCOPE?
You can inform patients that PERISCOPE is a decision-support tool that helps clinicians to early detect an infectious complication and it is used alongside clinical judgment.
  8. Does PERISCOPE prevent infections?
PERISCOPE helps identify risks earlier to reduce their impact and supports in the decision of early hospital discharge with confidence. In addition, PERISCOPE can help you identify which patients may benefit from targeted infection prevention methods.
  9. Will use of PERISCOPE lead to more antibiotic prescriptions?
PERISCOPE has no direct relationship with antibiotics prescribed because it only determines the risk of infection and does not give advice. We monitor antibiotic prescriptions in every hospital where PERISCOPE is implemented.
  10. Will use of PERISCOPE lead to more diagnostics such as laboratory tests?
PERISCOPE may prompt clinicians to order tests for high-risk cases, but these decisions should always involve clinical judgment.
  11. How are infections identified in the EHR data?
The outcome postoperative infection is defined as a clinically registered infection (e.g. ICD-code) and/or the infection is treated with either systemic antibiotic (not prophylactic) treatment and/or a surgical intervention to treat an infection.
  12. How do I get access to PERISCOPE?
PERISCOPE is integrated into the hospital’s EHR and becomes visible after implementation and departmental go-live.
  13. How much time does it take to use PERISCOPE?
PERISCOPE  does not require any data input. It works entirely with existing data from the EHR, providing you with predictions and a concise overview of relevant infection-related information, aiming to support efficient workflows and reduce time spent on manual data review.
  14. Do I need training or e-learning?
While training is not mandatory, video tutorials and implementation training are available to ensure effective use.
  15. What should I do if I notice discrepancies between PERISCOPE predictions and patient symptoms?
If you notice discrepancies between PERISCOPE predictions and patient symptoms, always prioritize clinical judgment and follow established medical protocols. If you suspect a potential issue with PERISCOPE, please report it to us by sending an email to support@healthplus.ai so we can investigate and address the matter promptly.

  1. How is authentication ensured in PERISCOPE?
The system does not allow end users to log in directly. Authentication from the EHRtakes place via the OAuth2.0 client credentials flow (client id, client secret). Admins from HealthplusAI™ can log in using username and password.
  2. How long does it take to implement PERISCOPE in a hospital?Implementation times vary but typically range from 7 to 12 weeks, depending on the hospital’s infrastructure and readiness.
  3. How does PERISCOPE implement permissions?
Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) ensures users only access the data and features necessary for their roles.
  4. Does PERISCOPE produce logs? Are they needed?
Monitoring, both in terms of system and model performance, is crucial to make sure software is running as intended. Therefore it’s relevant that HealthplusAI™ has access to the logs that PERISCOPE® produces.
  5. How are logs protected from modification or deletion?
A log mutation policy ensures logs remain intact for the agreed retention period.
  6. Where is data stored, and how is it protected?
Data is stored securely on GDPR-compliant servers, with robust encryption and backup systems in place.
  7. How do you handle system downtime or EHR updates?
PERISCOPE includes error handling mechanisms and collaborates with IT teams to maintain compatibility during updates.
  8. What are the hardware requirements for running PERISCOPE?
Standard secure servers compatible with EHR systems are required.
